Offset Planar Hinge

Offset planar hinge mechanism is a Watt I type mechanism with two straight brackets, two bent brackets, and two leaves. This mechanism allows the two leaves to rotate with respect to one another about a fixed centre of rotation in the plane. Credit goes to Hamlin and Sanderson, whom first introduced this unique mechanism (later patented in US, patent no: 5,657,584).

A Professor in Japan, Prof Yamamoto from Tokai University later used this mechanism in his research related to Micro-Manipulation System. It is proven from the designed prototype that this mechanism can contribute well in this micro-manipulation related problems.

Professor Yamomoto's invention

I'm now trying to also implement this special mechanism in my research. Aiming for micro-surgical application, this offset planar hinge will be designed and implemented on a prototype that is intended to contribute in that kind of surgery.
Combining this mechanism with suitable motor unit to control the motion of the hinge as well as the combined movement, will result in a precise and accurate movement of the hinge.

Micro-Manipulator for Neurosurgery

This is the problem statement.
Currently, I'm working on the robotic-arm and the design of the micro-manipulator.

*****
The micro-manipulator resembles the the tasks and movements of the neurosurgeon. In addition to that, the idea of tele-surgery will be employed. Among the advantages of this system are:
  1. reduce the fatigue experienced by the doctor
  2. reduce surgery cost
  3. reduce patient's trauma
  4. better precision
Among the concerns of the system are:
  1. micro-manipulator -> a robotic arm, where the micro end-effector must be able to perform very precise and accurate motion (micro motion)
  2. teleoperation -> must be in real time, no delays

This is currently the official website for my project: Micro-Manipulator for Neurosurgery. I will update anything related to my project here, as well as some findings that might help me in doing it.
